Remarks on some not so closed issues concerning discourse connectives
By now, we have quite a bit of data about discourse connectives as they manifest themselves in various types of corpora in a few languages. It is quite remarkable that many aspects of these connectives are quite stable across languages. However, as has been observed already, the class of these connectives in not quite a closed class. I will briefly comment on this partially open nature of this class. I will also briefly (and perhaps wildly) speculate what we might learn by looking at other modalities of linguistic communication.
